Above the streetlights
Just above the bright star Canopus (above the flare of this streetlight), there is a star called HD 40307. Standing on a clear, still night, it lies beyond human eyesight, but not human imagination. Orbiting this star is planet HD 40307g, seven times more massive than Earth, but carrying with it the possibility of oceans of liquid water, and maybe, life like ourselves. It is the closest Earth-like exoplanet yet discovered, just 44 light years distant.
